In November 2023, Aureos were appointed to deliver the Construction and Testing elements of the project, which looks to achieve improved connectivity within the two Gasworks and Copenhagen Tunnels on the approach to King’s Cross Station.
Project Scope
Funded by Train Operating Company – London North Eastern Railway (LNER), the ECML Tunnels Mobile Reception project forms part of a Department for Transport (DfT) initiative to improve connectivity and passenger experience across the UK rail network. Network Rail were contracted by LNER to deliver the design and install of a new communication system around Kings Cross Station, to ensure that the rail franchise can meet the DfT obligation in delivering improved mobile and on-board Wi-Fi signal.
The delivery of this project included:
- 5 tunnel bores
- 1 REB
- 4 panel antennas
- 40 Yagi antennas & associated bracketry
- 4 power cubicles
- 1 cable ladder
- 1, 500m of RF cabling
- 5 No. 432F ribbon fibre joint boxes
- All associated civils foundations and hardstandings
- Specialist terminating and testing of cabling
- Complex nature of working around a major station
Benefits
The current project aims to establish mobile coverage in the first two tunnels out of Kings Cross Station, namely the Gasworks Tunnel and the Copenhagen Tunnel. To achieve this, a Base Band Hotel will be installed at the Hornsey Street access point, connecting to BT infrastructure, power and telecoms equipment, as well as antennas and associated cabling at each tunnel mouth.
Once completed, the system will enable mobile phone coverage for East Coast Main Line passengers traveling through the Gasworks and Copenhagen tunnels, ultimately enhancing the overall passenger experience. The project involves various disciplines including telecoms, civils, and E&P, and is designed to significantly improve connectivity and convenience for rail passengers.
